If you can't ping its name but you can ping its IP address then there is probably a DNS issue. Check that you've setup DNS properly. Perhaps copy the settings from a computer that is working.

Hi,

I already copied the settings from a working pc but I still it didn't work. I still can't ping the proxy using its name, but I can ping others computers on the network using both IP address and their names.

was the proxy server or the laptop ever renamed? If so clean the registry. If the proxy server is in your network it should not get as far as DNS to resolve usualy netbios would resolve first. Try putting an entry in the host file on the laptop. something that comes to mind first though is why are you using the proxy server name to connect to the internet? You should be putting the proxy server IP address in internet explorer (or whatever browser you are using) along with the port it is listening on.

hi juniperr,

I'm using the IP address of the proxy server in the internet settings of my internet explorer. The problem I'm having is that my explorer can not connect to the internet and displays a message "cannot find server or dns error". I already copied the settings on a working computer but it didn't help. What also makes me curious is that is was working fine last week and just started to have problems since saturday. I also tried to restore the system to a previous date last week, it didn't help also.

big thanks!!!!
