Can't share internet connection
Hi everyone I'm new to the forum, I've looked every where for help on this. I'm running a host computer on XP and the client on 2000. I am using a crossover wire to connect them together because my router is at another place right now. Anyway it seems like everything is working but the internet connection, I can ping and the ping works and both computers show a 100 MPS connection between the two, but the 2000 box just won't connect to the internet. Can someone please help me. Thanks for any help.

Did you run the ICS wizard on the XP box? If not try running that and see if that resolves the issue.

It sounds like you've got communication between the two computers, but the only thing wrong is that you can't access the Internet from the 2000 machine. Make sure that as DudeDomain says, Internet Connection Sharing is enabled on the Internet connection on the XP machine. Also check that on the 2000 machine, the default gateway is set to the IP address of the XP computer.
If it still doesn't work, check if you can access http://216.239.41.99 . If you can access this, then you've probably got a DNS problem. |

wow edwinbrains that worked...now do you know how to fix the DNS problem? I'll look into it myself for the time being, but let me know if you know what the problem is. Thanks

If you can access that IP address, but not the domain name (like google.com) you need to have a way to translate domain names to IP addresses. This is handled by a DNS server. Your ISP should provide two of these for you - you need to find out what the IP addresses of your ISPs DNS servers are, probably by looking on their website.
Once you've got these two IP addresses, you need to open up the network connections from the control panel, and open up the properties for the local network connection. Open up Internet Protocol TCP/IP and in the section where it says DNS servers, enter the two addresses from your ISP. This should hopefully get you browsing domain names again ![]() |

Glad you got it working
![]() The printer sharing shouldn't be too difficult, but if you have problems, just come back here and create a new topic. |
