Can you stay within the network??

Have a question about programs like Ventrilo.

OK.. I have my own vent server setup on one of my computers. Here is the question. Rather than connecting though the normal ip address that everyone else would be using (the outside or wan address), If i were to connect directly to it, using the internal IP address, would it not bounce out side of the network, and therefor be faster?

Reason i ask is because we are having a lan party in a few weeks, and one or two people will be doing it remotely, so we are going to use vent. Would it save more bandwidth if we setup the server, and have everyone that is attending locally, to connect using the internal ip? or does it not matter?

From what i know about networks (what little i know) My best guess is that it would help reduce the lag abit since it doesn't have to bounce around the net first.

they can't connect directly to your lan ip because its not public ip [how can anyone tell 192.168.x.x from anyone else in the world also using that range?]

They are coming from the outside and that path won't change if using external or internal ip.

I think you misread what was asked wanderer2. Though what you said is true, it is not what Lyian wanted to find out.

To Answer the question:
Yes, I have a setup like that for lan parties and it works well. everyone physically present at my home connects using local address, everyone outside connects to external address.

Edit:
I should also add that the overhead is very very low even if everybody connected using the external IP. All local client traffic will be routed without putting the packets on wire outside your network anyway. You will just be saving the extra routing cost.
