Cannot access Linksys router with XP Pro
I am having trouble configuring a Linksys router. I have a small office set up with one laptop running XP pro. We want to set up a simple network. I can access the internet via the Linksys but cannot access the Linksys configuration set up. Also, I cannot get the XP system to recognize a networked printer. The XP pro is the only computer in the office. It's all I have to work with for now.

You mean http://192.168.1.1 doesn't get you to the router configuration screen? If not, what does happen when you enter the router IP in your browser?

Is your computer on the same subnet as the router? (ie: if your router is set to 192.168.1.1, does your computer have an IP address of something like 192.168.1.x?) Can you ping the router from your computer?
For the printer, you really need to give more information. You say it's a networked printer, but there is only the one computer in the office. Does the printer include its own print server then? Check that you can ping that. |

I can ping the router. I can access the the internet (DSL) via the router. When I type in 192.168.1.1 in the browser I get a "cannot find server" message. I don't think the computer is set to that subnet. However, I am not familiar enough with XP to do this. I think I need to go throughthe properties under the DSL connection under "networking" but from there I am a bit stumped. What I want to do is set the router to hand out IP's... The printer is an HP with a JetAdmin card. Thanks for your reply.

Can you click Start, Run and type "ipconfig /all > C:\ipconfig.txt" (without the quotes)? After a black screen has flashed up on the page, copy the contents from the C:\ipconfig.txt file into your next post.

Unfortunately, this office is a satellite office in another state. I wrote some of the info down.
From the Linksys: IP 192.168.0.44 Sub 255.255.0.0 From DSL IP 69. 40.xx.x Sub 255.255.255.255 DNS 166.102.1xx.x Does this help? |

Not really sure about that. Is 192.168.0.44 the IP address of the computer's internal local network card?

I don't belive so. I thought it came from the Linksys. Maybe a better thing is to walk me through the set up from "scratch." I followed the instructions that came with the router. I thought it was plug and play. I initially thought I had a conflict with the XP pro giving addresses and the Linksys DHCP engaged. Maybe there is a DNS issue. It seems like a settings issue but I am not sure what.

OK. So from the beginning. You have a router which has an ethernet interface. Into this router you have your computer plugged in. Perhaps it would now be a good point to reset the settings on the router (there should be a reset button), just to make sure that nothing has been set wrongly which is preventing the router from working. After resetting the router, you need to access the web interface.
If the router does, by default, have an Ip address of 192.168.1.1, then on your computer, manually set the IP address of its ethernet connection to 192.168.1.100, the subnet mask to 255.255.255.0, the default gateway and DNS server to 192.168.1.1. Then, you should be able to access the web based interface of the router. From there, you should be able to make any config changes you need and you should get the Internet working again. |

Well, edwinbrains, thank you for your help. I believe I have figured out the main problem thanks to you and the other responders to my question. I made a mistake and looked at the DSL connection properties thinking I would see the spaces to change my IP, subnet, and gateway addresses. What I needed to be looking at was the card in the laptop. "Staring me right in the face," so to speak. Thanks again.

Not all router are pre-configured with the 192.168.1.1 IP address. I have a Linksys Wireless router myself and the IP address to access the router is 192.168.0.1.. First time access username is admin with no password then you have to set one.
