Well, is the lights on the back on the NIC working? You could try another port on the router to see if that works.
I might have asked this before, but you are sure that you are using a router and not a hub??? If that doesn't work then maybe the cabling is messed... And if that is not it, I totally give up... And no, women are far more complex than computers. Agreed??

No, no, no - we never give up at Dev Shed ![]() I would have to say that there is some hardware problem. Double check the NIC, the network cable and the router/hub. Try everything out with another computer, to confirm that the components you are using are good. Try a different port on the hub/router perhaps. Quote:
Yep. You can just unplug the power cable if you get cross with a computer ![]() |

lmao why didn't I think of that? It's the obvious problem!I'll be waiting to see how you get on tomorrow with the different equipment. btw, if you are using a hub which is a switching one, I'd guess that you were using a switch. |

Ok, so you are using a hub. I would probably guess that if you were to go and shut down your sisters computer that you would be able to connect with the "girly" computer that refuses to connect....
The reason for this explanation; as far as understand from hubs, you have to have an IP address assigned through your ISP to accomidate any device that is connected to the hub.. Hubs are not DHCP's, router's are... If this is the case, then this would be the reason that you can't connect. How many IP addresses to do you have assigned to the account? Correct me if I'm wrong... Last edited by Mordotheman : April 26th, 2004 at 03:55 PM. |

You're correct that hubs aren't DHCP servers, but I'd presumed that he was running a DHCP server elsewhere on the network. A hub does nothing more than connect computers. But, I'd thought that you've got a computer with Internet Connection Sharing which was acting as the DHCP server. If you haven't, then it's no wonder the computer is getting the stupid IP addresses - because there's nothing to give it a nice IP address!
If you haven't got a DHCP server on the network, you'll have to set the Ip address manually. |

i have a server with ICS setup and therefore that should all be fine. But even if i didnt could i not just have static ip's and connect like that? irrelevent i know but just thought i'd ask !!
EDIT: is there anyway of checking that the ICS is setup ok? ie giving off good ip's?? cheers guys RF |

Sure, what is the IP address of the computer that you are able to connect on? If you have something other than 169.254.x.x then you should be good to go...
Something else that might not be working is this... If you have a server running ICS make sure that you have it to distripute the right amount of IP address. Last edited by Mordotheman : April 26th, 2004 at 04:49 PM. |

Well seeing that you are getting 192.168.0.23 for an IP address, you can now determine that it has nothing to do with IP distubution.
Now that you have formatted the computer and have a fresh OS, are you able to ping out to the real world yet? |

Just to let you know, but ICS is pretty limited. You can't change what IP addresses it distributes I don't think, it just does what it wants. You could check that it's working by seeing if another computer can get an IP address from it. It should be able to.
