![]() house network all running XP Pro. i have got one machine that can't see other machine on the network other machines can see that machine but can't access it.I have tried disabling all firewalls but nothing the computer in question initially had a ip of 169.254.x.x auto assigned so i changed that to 192.168.0.14 so that it is on the same subnet as the others. It cant ping the ICS server and cant access the web I've tried recreating a "home network" and that didn't fix it either arrrrrrrrrgh can anyone advise me on the irritation ?? cheers RF

I'm not too sure, but I couldn't not answer seeing you had 4 unhappy faces in that post
![]() Could I check the ipconfig for that computer? Start, Run "ipconfig /all > C:\ipconfig.txt" (without the quotes) and then copy the contents of the file into your next post. What do you mean when you say that other machines can see it but can't access it? Also double check that ICF is disabled. Are they running in the same workgroup? |

Hello.
Now, if your computer had a 169.254.x.x IP address and you assigned it a 192.168.x.x IP address, that doesn't really mean that you are going to be able to connect to the Internet or your network.... If the computer is pulling a 169 IP, then there is a connection error with the computer and it wouldn't matter what you assigned it... And if you can't ping the ICS server then you definately have no connection.... Options: In this case, I think that I would consider ripping the NIC and reinstalling the drivers for it. Sound like the NIC might be screwed and it "might" need replacing. And how the other computers on the network can see that computer is way weird..... Check the cabling that you are using and make sure that you don't have a patch cable in place, they have to have crossover cables. Consider getting a router of some sort. Make life so much easier and less stressful. You can pick up re-furbished ones for dirt cheap and they work like charm. Last edited by Mordotheman : April 25th, 2004 at 07:27 AM. |

!! I can't post the ipconfig at the mo as the computer is in my sisters room and she is asleep but i will 2mrw. By ICF i assume u mean a firewall?? i have tried with them turned off. I mean that my computer and my laptop can see the other computer but the other computer can only see itself. Thanks for replying ![]() Mordotheman: well it has worked before by changing the ip address but i will try your suggeston with the NIC drivers and i think i have a spare one somewhere but i will have to find it out. It is all going trough a hub so it is using patch cables ![]() Thanks for your replies RF |

Hello,
I had the same problem. But i had a 98 and 2000. My 2000 could access the 98 but the 98 couldnt access the 2000. I told the 2000 that I would always be logged in as Admin, no pass. When I tried to access on 98 wouldnt work. It was I needed to sign is as admin w/ no pass on 98. By loggin off. Hope this helps, networking is hard, but a relief after |

Yes I do. You need to check that when you right-click the network connection, select Properties and click the Advanced tab, that the Internet Connection Firewall checkbox is not ticked. But I think Mordotheman's suggestion of the new NIC would be a good idea to try next. |

You could try this little program to see if it resets anything. It will remove the winsock registry keys and replace them with fresh ones..
http://web.ics.purdue.edu/~shershbe Download and run the winsock repair If this doesn't work then I think that I would be trying a system restore to put it back to an early date when it worked.

Oh dear, this is getting really good....
Well the next step that I would consider and possibly the last, would be to uninstall all the Network services from the computer. Control Panels, Add/Remove Programs, Add/Remove Windows Components and uncheck Network Services. Reboot the PC and reinstall the services the same way that you uninstalled it. ***Make sure that you have a copy of the Windows XP cd before you do this*** Quick question, do you possibly have a USB cable around and the drivers for the modem that you are connecting to to see if you are able to connect this way? What Service Pack do you have for the computer? Something else, what are the lights on the NIC doing at the back of the computer? Last edited by Mordotheman : April 26th, 2004 at 12:55 PM. |
