computers do not appear in my network places

The next hurdle now is to get my computers to show up in each others workgroup.
What setting have i got wrong? what should i be looking at?
The ping is fine both ways, the client does not see anything?
I have started the browser on each machine, this time last week i was sorted with a full network, i foolishly thought i had the hang of this by now.

I have netbios enabled on both machines, i did this by clicking the advanced tab on the tcp window and then the wins tab, ticked the box enable netbios over tcp ( is this correct?? )
Should i install some of the other stuff , service, client e.tc.
netbios spx e.t.c, netbios link
Would this help?

The client lan has these items running

folders shared

I have a folder with music in the C drive on the client, i have rightclicked and choosed share and applyed it
I have done the same with a folder on the host.
On the host in workgroup, it see's itself and when i click it i can see the folders i have shared on that machine, no other machine or anything else.
The client is much worst, no show of anything whatsoever in workgroup, not even the sand timer on the mouse to convince me it even tried to find another PC or itself.

and these two computers can definitely communicate OK?

I don't really know why this isn't working... I've found My Network Places to be quite useless in the past.

I'm guessing you've already done this, but the two computers are on the same workgroup, aren't they?

Client is 192.168.0.2
255.255.255.0
192.168.0.1 ( gateway )

dns settings are on both machine 194.74.65.68 and 194.74.65.69

Interesting problem... On both computers are you an administrator? Make sure that on both computers you're using an account with exactly the same username/password.

client pc

on the client pc, when i reinstalled windows xp about 6 months back i labeled the machine kealey ( my daughters name ) I left the password option alone, the windows just loaded up everytime without asking for a password.

When i first had a mess about with the networking on this pc, i installed something on the lan card propeties ( not sure what? ) and ever since , when windows loads up a password box comes up ( log onto windows/netware style box ) not the usual windows xp style picture style log on ( hope you know what i mean )
By default it loads up in the username as kealey ( you just insert the password )
I have since made a identical account on the user accounts section of windows xp to the host machine's account
when windows now loads, the netware/windows logon box appears, i delete kealeys name and put the other account name and password to coinside with host's account.

Is that any better for you, can you see a problem there,
Would it help if i formatted the client machine?

Darren

That logon screen is controlled by the options in Control Panel, User Accounts, Change the way users log on or off. You'll want to make sure that Use the Welcome screen is ticked.

But this shouldn't actually make a difference to the network. From the sounds of it, I think you're logging onto the computer with a username/password which matches one on the main host computer. However, just change the option to make it the same logon screen as the host, just to check this isn't the problem.

One more thing, are these accounts administrative accounts?

This is really strange. Have you now got the same type of logon screen on both computers?

Progress!!

Hi Ed ,

I have a little good news for you mate,
I now have both computers showing in each workgroup on each machine.
I went into both lan card propeties and installed the NWLINK/NETBios SPX e.t.c e.tc
Once i did this on both things are looking much better.
The situation now is, i can get into the host files and folders from the client but going from the host pc to the clent, the files and folders ACCESS IS DENIED.
I have several folders shared on the client machine, so that is not the problem, on both pc's the win xp log on welcome screen now loads up on both with the same username and same password ( both admin accounts )

Mission Completed!

Hi Ed,

I have sorted it!
Even though it would not work with the first identical set of usernames and passes, i created another 2 identical set of usernames and passwords, one for each machine and selected the admin option and thats it!
I now have internet on both machines and i can share folders both ways.
Thanks for help!
I now can move the upstairs pc back up to the spareroom where it belongs and probally save my myself from the missus packing her bags.
