confused bigtime with swicthes

Hi,

Ive jsut started a job a network admin and cuz the old network guy left, thing is i cant get my head round some of his network it doesnt make sense to me.

So can someone please explai the deal with this switch - we have a swicth in our server room (hp pro curve 400) anyway we have a DMZ for the servers- tell me if i being thick here but should all of the servers be plugged into the swicth on the same columns (ie A) or can they be plugged in anywhere on the switch.

Also they have the servers sitting in the dmz access by both lan and wan

Cheers

Andy

what model switch is that? is it a 408 or 4000m? Im not very familiar with HP switches and dont see a 400 procurve listed. what you need to be aware of is some managed switches can have Vlans in that case it does matter what port you plug stuff into otherwise if it is a 408 unmanaged switch plug in anywhere on the switch. what is creating the DMZ (router, switch,or firewall)?

Hi,

its the ProCurve 4000m switch, the firewall is creating the DMZ.

It goes.

Outside - Cisco 2500 Router

2500 - Firewall 1 & Cisco PIX

Firewall 1 - DMZ

Cisco PiX - Switch.

Also the servers are access by outside and inside the LAN does that make any difference?

Cheers

telnet into the HP4000 and go to switch configuration/advanced features/vlan menu. If you can get this far you have vlans enabled or you would come into the initial vlan configuration screen. Take a look at vlan port assignment or vlan names to determine what vlans you are running and/or port assignments for them.

If no vlans but the default then any port will do. With mulitple vlans only correctly configured ports will do.
