If you can ping between the computers in both directions, what do you mean by "see"? What happens if you type \\computername in the address bar of the XP computer (replacing computername with the name of the 2000 computer)? Do you get any error messages?
Also check that any firewalls are disabled or configured for home networking. |

Try using similar accounts on both computers. What I mean by this is use accounts which have exactly the same username and password. Hopefully, this should authenciate you and not prompt for a username/password.
