connecting to a managed switch behind a router from distance
Hello,
I have 2 questions here, but first I will explain the situation. The network setup is: => Cable modem with static IP connect to the internet => router (192.168.0.1) => managed layer 2 switch at 192.168.0.10(D-link DES-3250TG) => 28 clients starting from 192.168.0.32 to 192.168.0.96. I have set up port mirroring on the switch for port 1 to 47 and the target port is 48. 1. I need a program to connect to the target port on the switch so see the stats of the switch, download, upload per port etc. 2. I want to connect from anywere to my network switch via the internet at the location where the installation resides to see the stats of the ports. Is there anyone that can help me? I need this for work tomorrow. thanks already for the response. ![]() |

You can try etheral, available at ethereal.com
You can map your telnet port on switch to a virtual server port on your router's WAN interface. When you telnet to your public IP, you will get directly to your switch. HTH The Network Department |

your question is vague, since you are port mirroring Im assuming you want to sniff the data? this you could use ethereal as suggested or like Observer which is expensive that does sniffing and treanding of traffic. If you are looking for port stats by port on your switch such as Packets sent or recieved or errors turn off port mirroring and use an SNMP program connecting to the switch such as solarwinds. To connect to anything inside your network over the internet you should use VPN as telnet is unencrypted clear text password and data. or use something like PC anywhere with you dialing directly to an internal device.
