connecting two networks
hello everyone,
I have two networks. one in dallas and one in colorado and id like to be able to connect them together so i can transfer some files. they are both set up with routers distributing DSL to all the computers on the network. Im currently in colorado and want to connect to the dallas network from here. i have the non-static IP addresses and domain names for the dallas network and ive tried the obvious [ just typing these in IE]. i can ping the IP but i cant access the files at all or even see that files exist. i can obviously contact the colorado network from colorado and the dallas network from dallas by simply typing in the IP address in IE. but that only works becasue im INSIDE the network when i do it. once im OUTSIDE the dallas network how can i get back in??? i, of course, have all the necessary usernames passwords, but i cant even get the point where i need them yet. if this is confusing just say so and ill try to describe the situation better. any help or experience would be greatly appreciated. i guess this is similar to connecting a business network to a home network.l thanks for your help in advance |

I think the easiest way to do this would be to setup a VPN between the two networks.

So are you trying to access an internally hosted website from outside the network? If you are, then just setup the routers with port forwarding, sending port 80 to the internal web server. |

ok right...
my router settings are good. no worries there. the whole deal is that i want to access this computer when all i have is some basic ip information: the public IP (shared by all the computers on my network) the private IP (specific to each computer on that network) the subnet mask the gateway and the domain name (and passwords) next time ill enable remote access so that i can access it....im not sure if this will work, but next time there will be peopel both here, in colorado and there, in dallas. that way i can troubleshoot better. but for now thats all i have and i want to know if its possible to access that network from here thanks |

If you are away from the computer you're trying to access and know only the information you gave above, I don't think you can access the computer. Beforehand, you need to have setup a VPN between the locations or installed software such as VNC or enabled the built-in Remote Desktop feature. Just having access to the computer's IP address (both external and internal) won't help.
