Creating a Domain?

Ok, this might sound stupid. But how do you actually go about creating a domain where users log in to? I've taken 2 Win2K classes and setup a few servers, but never had anyone log into a domain? Do I just promote my server to a Primary Domain Controller? Then setup user accounts on the PDC?

Windows 2000 doesn't have Primary or Backup Domain Controllers, they are all just domain controllers. You need to install Active Directory which will setup your domain. Then create usernames and join clients to the domain.

sure windoes 2000 doesnt have PDCs or BDCs? I could have sworn I've heard my prof. talk about them. And I thought I read about them last nite in my textbook?

Anyways, I'm going to be doing this on 2003, so I take it its the same? Just install AD then setup my user accounts? Then go to the different computers and allow them to join the domain?

Yes, I'm sure 2000 domains don't have PDCs or BDCs. Windows 2000 domains are multi-master domains and you can make changes on any domain in a network, not just a PDC like NT 4.

The easiest way to install Active Directory is to run dcpromo at the Run dialog box.

dcpromo promotes a regular server to a domain controller.

It's under C:\WINNT\system32. Are you sure you're on Windows 2000 Server?

Yeah, it probably doesn't have the functionality to be a domain controller.

Using either 2000/2003 Server or Advanced Server should work fine.

2003 Server has different versions...

Standard
Enterprise
Data Center
Web

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsser...reeditions.mspx

according to that page, Web edition has partial support for AD. how can you partially support AD?

Standard, Enterprise, and Datacenter can all be domain controllers. I'd use one of those.
