Designing a network
Hey everybody,
As a school project I have to design a LAN for a distribution warehouse. I have idea's and have already completed a simple design however i thought i'd be best off asking the pro's their opinion. So could you give me some tips or point me in the best direction? Cheers, here it is. Using your knowledge of Local Area Networks, create a network solution for the business. Include a labelled network diagram, showing all required components. Justify your solution to management. Clients place orders either by phone, fax or via email. The orders are then entered into a database management system. This system keeps track of all orders placed, including backorders and stock supply levels. In the warehouse, workers fill the orders as they arrive to the warehouse supervisor. A picking slip is used for this purpose, which consists of a list of the parts required and location of each part in the warehouse. Due to the layout of the site, the warehouse is physically removed from the office/admin area by a distance of 50m. The manager keeps track of the day to day operation at his terminal in the office area and on occasion handles complaints made by clients. Thanks a lot, James |

this is not a place for homework question - go away and do it yourself. We get tired of lazy kids who can't be bothered to go to the library or to use google.

I quote from the description of the network forum:
Quote:
I don't see homework mentioned there. You want to find Sepodati and he'll give you a link to the Homework Forum... Do you really expect people to write out your answer for you and give a labelled diagram? We like to help people solve their problems, not do their work for them, just like christo said. |

haha, notice how i asked for "tips" and a lead in a direction? nowhere did i ask for an answer. also the point of my post was not to obtain a specific answer but to lead to a discussion on this hypothetical network, and this forum would be an alrite choice for that right?
Quote: "Networking Help forum discussing issues such as routers, switches, small networks, file sharing etc." Nevermind, no harm done. But may i be so bold as to ask where i could find Sepodati? or do i have to solve that problem myself as well? Sorry for the cheek, James |

He's one of the more tough moderators here at Dev Shed. You'll find him here. The Homework Forum was a joke, just because he's told other people to go to the homework forum in the past. |

I don't mind helping out. You weren't asking for your homework to be done just for some guidence pointers.
If you look online at the Windows 2000 deployment guide and Active Directory setups you will see some design considerations dealing with a similiar described setup. If you look at similar guides concerning setting up SQL server you will get the idea dealing with the inventory/order database servers configuration. The physical diagram will be that of WAN links, routers, switches and servers. For extra credit suggest a phone system link between the two sites using VOIP to reduce inneroffice communication costs. |
