DHCP Problem?

Ok, so i was replacing a broken hard drive and the whole system went defunct. Typical with windows.

Anyway, i reinstalled Windows XP using recovery CDs, but i cannot connect to my LAN. I think it is because it is not being assigned addresses by the DHCP of the router. Any ideas?

(^^;?(You check it rather than any idea?)

Use "ipconfig" in console to know the current address.

If it isn't correct, you should set it according to your provider's instruction and your router's manual. You may have to disable PPPoE by XP or do more? It depends on your provider and its course.

I think it has something to do with NIC. Could someone explain what that is?

the ip is assigned fine, it is the gateway which isn't

Thread moved.

The NIC is the Network Interface Card which connects your computer to the router. If DHCP is enabled on the router, the router should automatically assign all the important settings (IP address, subnet mast, default gateway, DNS servers) to the NIC. If you're sure that the IP address has been assigned properly, I'd guess that the router has also given you the default gateway address.

I can check if you want. From the Command Prompt type "ipconfig /all > C:\ipconfig.txt" (without the quotes), then copy the contents from the ipconfig.txt file into your next post.

Thanks

Hey,

Thanks for the information about the NIC. Between the time I posted the question and when you responded i found the original driver for the ethernet card.

Solution:
Unplug the LAN
Uninstall the ethernet card driver
Reboot
Install Ethernet Card
Plug in LAN

This solved the problem for me.
