Question Direct Connect/Router Help

I am new to networking, so please feel free to elp if you would like. First off, I have a Dell Dimension 4550 w/ WINXP, and a HP-Pavilion w/ WINME. I have a Linksys router for both of them. I recently bought a Direct Connect Cable so I could share files as well as games with both computers. I can't seem to get it working. It says the "Host" computer name is not found. When I type it in it gives the same response. I tried to change the name of the "Host" computer but I have no luck in that! PLEASE HELP!!! If there is a way I can network over the router that would help too. I'm on AIM right now w/ the name RedMan111603. Thanks.

Make sure each computer has a NIC. Buy two standard straight-through patch cables, and connect both computers to a spare port on the router. Configure each computer to obtain its IP settings from the router, and then see if you can ping between the two computers.
