This should really be so simple. This a.m. 4 computers networked with a dial up modem using a switch- this afternoon dsl arrived
and the 3 computers with win xp switched over great! Online, checked email.... We are using a dsl modem, a D-link router with LAN connections and the same switch as before plugged into the router. The computer with win 98, I am having trouble configuring - it is not being seen on the network. What changes do I need to make in the properties. I've changed what I thought would be logical and shut down and restarted but to no avail. Your assistance is greatly appreciated.THANK YOU! HiD |

Make sure the Win 98 computer is on the same workgroup, has the IP address set correctly (such as 192.168.0.x), has the subnet set to 255.255.255.0 and has the default gateway set to the IP address of the router (probably 192.168.0.1).
Try accessing something like www.google.com - it should work OK. If it doesn't work, try pinging the other computers and the router. Also try accessing http://216.239.59.99 - it this works and www.google.com doesn't, then you need to setup your DNS servers. Get the DNS server addresses from your ISP and make sure that these are set in the LAN network properties for the network card. |

trouble still

I have done this and the computer is able to be seen by the other 3 computers but the win 98 is not able to see the other 3. Is the DNS server address needed even with a dsl connection through a different computer ? Any other suggestions?? Last edited by HiD : March 9th, 2004 at 08:04 AM. You should be using the router to do dhcp so you will automatically get the right DNS server.
Sounds like you have not told IE to use the dsl instead of the dialup. |

Can you ping the other computers from the Win 98 computer? If you can, can you access shared folders, by typing something like \\computername\sharename into the address bar in Windows Explorer? (replace computername with the name of the computer, and sharename with the name of the share). Make sure the XP computers don't have any firewalls running - including the built-in Internet Connection Firewall. Quote:
The DNS server may be needed to translate domain names, such as www.google.com into IP addresses. If you can't access the domain www.google.com, but can access http://216.239.59.99 then you know that you need the DNS servers. |

what do I do?

THANKS! Your patience is appreciated. What do I do to make the IE use the dsl? There was never a dial up modem in the win 98 computer. It has always been networked via a switch with a LAN with these same other win xp computers. I have tried manually setting up the connections and also letting it be autoconfigured. DCHP not being set up right. How do I do it? |

Thanks for all of your help. A combination of perseverance and luck and we have all 4 computers networked. Truly your posts mean alot to us wayward souls who are trying to figure out this networking business. ![]() |
