ethernet standard cables and hub
i recently made an ethernet cable but it does not work i don't know why... it is very strange, you can think that i did something wrong but i've changed the plugs 3 times now and all that happens is this: when i connect with that cable to the hub, the led first flashes in green, then flashes in yellow, and then comes a third but shorter flash in yellow, and it repeats and repeats and the pc says that there's no connection... there's no misconfiguration coz the pc connects perfectly with other shorter cables, so, what is the problem here????

I'm not sure, but I guess there is something wrong with the cable. Check that you've wired the wires correctly (for a patch cable, they need to be different at both ends). Also, in the Device Manager, select your network adapter and try to reduce the speed from 100Mbits to 10Mbits. See if that makes a difference.

Hey R++
What is the length of the cable that you are using.. The max length that you can use with ethernet cable is 100 meters. Here is a picture for the patch wire setup. http://www.homenethelp.com/web/explain/images/cabst.jpg |

the cable is not so long, only 5 to 7 meters, so where exactly can i change the speed from 100 to 10 (windowsXp)?...
i'm shure the wires are ok, i'v changed the plugs 3 times now and the same thing happens always, and i really don't want to waste another two plugs and 7 meters of cable ![]() |

In Windows XP, open up the System applet from the Control Panel. Click the Hardware tab and select the Device Manager button. Expand Network Adapters and select the Properties for the name of your network card. In the new window that opens, click the Advanced tab and there should be a list of options in a listbox on the left. Select the one which allows you to change the speed. Then, try setting something like 10Mbps half duplex and see if this helps.
In my previous post I said that the patch cables had to be different at each end. Sorry, that's wrong! Mordotheman's link does show the correct setup - the cable needs to be the same at both ends. |
