A switch does not get installed locally or require drivers.

Do you mean Network Interface Card [nic]? Which does install in a pc and requires drivers.

Please clarify your question.

it may not be switch

I don't its about the switch that you are saying about. A switch does not require a driver.

no, a switch does not require drivers, switches are large pieces of equipment that usually sit in dark rooms, or behind walls, in ceilings, etc. they are very expensive and if you are a home user, WAY more power than you could ever justify in a house. You MIGHT be talking about a hub if you are connecting multiple computers together, a hub is a small device that usually connects 4-8 computers together. you might also be talking about a router, which CAN use software and usually has it's own internal OS. a router would be used for managing a cable modem (a cable modem being a special kind of router) or T1/3 line. although i wouldn't guess you would be using anything faster than a cable modem anyways. and a NIC (network interface card) is what plugs into your computer to give you access to hubs, router, switches, and even other computers through ethernet cables.

so, please clarify, what exactly are you using?
