Excel saving problem on server

Hello everyone,

Im having a problem with some excel files located on a server I was hoping you could help me with. Every time I save certain files, it saves the original and creates a copy, the filename is a random bunch of letters and numbers. It happens only on excel files and only on selected files, although it seems spread across multiple files. I believe it's only excel files with macro's, but there may be others as well.

Has anyone any idea what the problem could be? I'd presume it's a permissions error but Im not certain which permission is causing this issue.

Thanks for your help.

I think this happens when you have multiple users opening and writing to the file, but there could also be other causes. Do the files have sharing enabled? On my version, it's under Tools => Protection. Other versions might have it under workbook properties. Try searching for "sharing" in help.

Have you got remote desktop access to another machine? You could test this hypothesis using remote desktop or borrow a coworker's machine and see what happens when you create a file on the share and open it for writing from one or two machines.

Anyway, I suspect it's got something to do with the "Sharing with track changes" setting on some of your excel files.
