file sharing between windows xp and windows 98

the internet sharing works fine.

and on windows 98 it shows little internet gateway icon.

but windows 98 doesnt show the shared folders.

yet win xp shows all the shared folders including the win 98 one. and i can put files there.

if i go to go network neighborhood on win98 all i see is entire network and i cant access it.

it worked fine before. but then i reinstalled win98 and had to redo the whole network thingy

thank you

=D well f**k me.

if you got one of them prompts for username and password on win98. dont hit ESC if the username is Default and no password is required. press enter +D

so the whole "create use in win xp that's the same as on win 98" deal applies even if you dont use passwords =D.

i need some sleep now =)

I am having a similar problem, well the opposite. My windows XP boxes can see both the windows XP boxes shared files. The windows 98 SE box can see the windows XP shared folders and access then without a problem. They are all on the same network of the same name. I can't seem to get the 98 box seen on the network, even on the 98 SE box. Another problem is I also have a 98 ME box I'm trying to add to the network and it can't even access the network. I think it's a login problem but I don't know how to fix it. I'm stupid when it comes to networking. I can't even code so I suck at computers but I'm "all they have." What "they" want is to share files between one XP box and the 98 SE box and share files between the 98 ME box and the other XP box -- 4 computers total. I have the two XP boxes sharing files as they wish, depending on wether they are shared or not. I also have one XP box sharing the printer of the other XP box.

To sum it all up I want to know what special has to be done to get the Windows 98 SE box seen on the network and what I have to do to get the ME box to access/seen on the network.

I went to google and found that "xp doesn't like computers running NetBEUI" so I removed NetBEUI. I also read that the DNS config. should be disabled. NetBIOS should be enabled. I can't seem to get any further. I don't really mind I'm "paid by the hour" within reason :P I have done a lot for them and they are very excited about it so telling them I can't get the two computers that they want to share files with to share files/be on the network would probably get my time wasted and them dissapointed. I don't know how I get myself into these messes... Maybe I shouldn't tell people I know stuff about computers. **** I'm dumb.

Do you have a firewall on the Windows 98 computer which is preventing access to it?

With the Me computer, firstly check to see if it can ping the other computers.
