file sharing server 2003?
i would like to first thank everyone so much for your help with this...
i have built a very small home network. but i for some reason cannot not access shared files on my shared machines. the following is my setup... i have qwest dsl, im using the actiontek gt-701 gateway modem, and a linksys router model befsr41. the actiontek is dsl gateway also has wireless g built in it that im using. i have the dsl cable from the phone line plugged into the actionteck, then the ethernet cable from the actiontek plugged into the uplink to the linksys. then the linksys port 1 plugged into my server. machine one: my server, and im running windows server 2003. this machine is suppose to be my backbone and iis server. iis is working great. machine two: is in my music studio and i wanna use it to store my music but be able to access the shared folders from the other two computers, especially computer three. this system is running windows xp pro. you may also need to know that this machine is another desktop, and connect through the linksys through wired ethernet. machine three: this machine is also running windows xp pro, but it is a laptop. im using this machine to connect to the internet wirelessly. i use this system the most. i can connect to the internet with all three machines with no problem. everything seems to be working great. the main problem at this time is... i cannot connect to shared folders, is there something i have to setup on the server? please help... thanks again d@ve |

If you're sharing the files from computer two (which isn't the server), there isn't anything you should need to configure on the server. Everything should be setup from the computer itself.
To begin with, can you ping machine two from machine three? |

yes i can, but you gave me a good idea. in the run command if i type \\surstudio2\music i get network path not found. but if i type the internal ip adderss and shared folder \\192.168.0.5\music i connect. maybe it has something to do with dns?

Just a thought, but since you're running a Windows Server, you could have your own local DNS server, which could translate computer names into IP addresses and then forward external ones to your ISP. But you shouldn't need to do this...
