Firewire Networking
Hey, I was wondering if you people could help me. Here's the problem:
I have a Windows 2000 Pro (Service Pack 4 with Networking Tech.) Laptop and a Windows XP Home Edition (Service Pack 1) Desktop. I would like to network them by firewire, to share files and an Internet connection (The Internet connection is the most important, the files are secondry). I have tried, but so far to no avail. Does anyone have experience in this field? Thanks |

let's start out with this question for you. which computer do you want to be the host and which the "server" i put that in quotations because it's not a true server, but more like a connection share deployment center. (haha, that's kinda funny) in my experience (only with ethernet mind you) the XP machine might be easier to use as the CSDC especially with the built in firewall protection. simply what i would tell you would be to get that hooked to the internet (via cable modem or dial up or ISDN or even DSL if that's your case) and then simply SHARE that connection. it's a tab in the network connection settings, really easy for either Win2k or XP. If I understand correctly, Firewire can just replace an Ethernet connection for networking the computers. Then you just add both computers to a workgroup and can share files across the workgroup, which is simple with only 2 computers in it.

The Cable internet connection comes through the Windows XP Maching. Through the RJ-45 Ethernet Socket.
The rest of your stuff, I have kind of tried, but it doesn't seem to work. Maybe I need a step by step walk through, I don't really have a clue what I'm doing. |

2 things
1) do you get the internet to work fine on the XP machine? 2) don't forget that if you want to connect the two machines directly you need a CROSSOVER ethernet cable. You cannot use a stright through because the input and outputs are mixed up. |

The internet works fine on the Desktop (Win XP).
But, I am connecting the computers with firewire. Ethernet only comes into it, as that is how my Desktop gets the internet. |

By default, Windows 2000 does not support firewire networking, although Windows XP does. You'll need to use a program like FireNet which you can install on both PCs. This will make the firewire connection seem like a standard ethernet connection to the OS. Buy that software, install it, configure it, connect a firewire cable between them and that should work.
