That looks perfect to me
![]() Are you sure that you can't ping the addresses 192.168.1.15 and 192.168.1.20 from either computer? I'd double check that things like workgroup, computer names are OK, and that you haven't got any firewalls running. Also double check that the cable connecting the two computers is in place. |

hi edwin
doubled checked everything, but still no ping from either side!! I realized, that when I enable the bridge I also loose my connection to the internet. Eric |

Ermm, well...
I don't think we've tried the XP network setup wizard yet. Try running this on the xp computer, checking the IP addresses and then try pinging again. If this still doesn't work, try removing the bridge and see where you stand. However, you'll need the bridge to access the Internet from the second PC. Without the bridge, the second PC would only be able to view the other computer, and not the router which is needed for Internet access. |

haywire
hi edwin
I tried the manual route and managed that I can ping both machines from both sides. When I try to bridge the firenet-adaptor with the wireless adapter on the XP machine, I cannot ping the win 2000 machine anymore. Also my Internet-connection on the XP machine is lost then. I tried the wizard too, but no luck pinging!! hereīs the config after running the wizard: Windows 2000 IP Configuration Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : avid Primary DNS Suffix . . . . . . . : Node Type . . . . . . . . . . . . : Hybrid IP Routing Enabled. . . . . . . . : Yes WINS Proxy Enabled. . . . . . . . : No Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection: Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Unibrain 1394 FireNet Adapter Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-41-40-2C-9D-62 DHCP Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : No IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.15 Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0 Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1 DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1 Win XP Config Ethernetadapter Drahtlose Netzwerkverbindung: Verbindungsspezifisches DNS-Suffix: Beschreibung. . . . . . . . . . . : PCM1000 Wireless LAN Card Adapter Physikalische Adresse . . . . . . : 00-50-FC-7D-C3-9A DHCP aktiviert. . . . . . . . . . : Ja Autokonfiguration aktiviert . . . : Ja IP-Adresse. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.11 Subnetzmaske. . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0 Standardgateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1 DHCP-Server . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1 DNS-Server. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1 192.168.1.1 Lease erhalten. . . . . . . . . . : Donnerstag, 8. OK - this is getting frustrating, but we'll get there eventually
![]() Let's do one thing at a time. No bridge, but communication between the two computers. The 2000 computer already looks fine. On the XP computer, set the IP address on the firewire card manually to something like 192.168.1.x and the subnet mask to 255.255.255.0. At the moment, the firewire card on the XP computer is on the wrong subnet (192.168.0.x). Change back and you should have communication between the two machines. |

when I get a ping, what should I try next?

Ah, now isn't that just the question?!
I suppose once you've got the computers pinging, check that you can share files/folders between them. I should have thought that this would work. After checking this, get the Internet working on the XP machine. If the DHCP is working on the router, you can set the wireless adapter to automatically obtain its settings - otherwise you need to set it up manually, with an IP address which is on the same subnet as the wireless router. Get the Internet working on the XP machine and then we'll move on ![]() |

I can ping and I can copy files But when I activate the firewire adaptor on the XP machine I loose internet connectivity. Tried the bridging the adaptors - doesnīt do the job. Tried sharing internetconnection - doesnīt do the job. anything else? I said it was tricky ! ![]() |

I think I'm getting confused
I thought the XP machine and 2000 machine were connected by firewire. Surely you have to have the firewire on the XP machine activated or they'd never ping. Perhaps you should just go though your setup again, because either there's something strange going on or I'm trying to setup something different ![]() |

donīt get confused here !
Of course the firewire adaptor is activated when Iīm pinging the other machine. I can also share files. But when it is activated I loose my internetconnection on the xp machine. To get into the internet again I have to deactivate it!! Thatīs the whole problem I think, and I donīt know why it is doing this. |

OK - I think the problem is that everything is on a different subnet. You've got the router configured on the 192.168.0.x subnet and your firewire network on 192.168.1.x. Leave your router set to the address 192.168.0.x and change the firewire adapters to have addresses on the same subnet.
So you should end up with something like this: Router - 192.168.0.1 XP Wireless connection IP: 192.168.0.10 Subnet: 255.255.255.0 Default gateway: 192.168.0.1 DNS Servers: 192.168.0.1 XP Firewire connection IP: 192.168.0.15 Subnet: 255.255.255.0 Default gateway: 192.168.0.1 DNS Servers: 192.168.0.1 2000 Firewire connection IP: 192.168.0.20 Subnet: 255.255.255.0 Default gateway: 192.168.0.1 DNS Servers: 192.168.0.1 I think this setup will get you communicating between the two pcs and the Internet on the XP machine. Once you've got everything on the same subnet, I think setting up the bridge correctly would also get the Internet on the 2000 machine. HTH ![]() |

hi edwin
I set it up exactly like you described and everything is now on the same subnet with its own IP . I can ping and share files over firewire between the XP and the win 2000 PC. But the problem persists: When the firewire-adaptor is activated on the XP machine >> Hasta la vista Internet! (I mean I canīt even surf with the XP machine any more) So why is that?? If you have any idea we are a big step further to a solution I think. ![]() |

Now that you've got the same subnet in the two networks, I think the bridge is going to work nicely. Select the two connections on the XP machine and right-click one and select Bridge Connections. Then check that the IP address is static at 192.168.0.15, the subnet is 255.255.255.0, the default gateways and DNS servers are 192.168.0.1. I'm pretty certain that this should keep the network with the 2000 computer and give you Internet access
![]() If it doesn't, can you ping both the router and the 2000 computer from the XP computer. Also check that you can ping the XP computer from the 2000 computer. |

I think weīve been here before... but I did as you said and bridged the connections, assigned IPīs and subnet manually for this bridge.
>> It doesnīt work I canīt ping and I canīt acces internet on neither machine. And I think you overread my last message. There I said I think it has to do with the fact, that when both adaptors are running on the xp machine at the same time, I loose internet connection and the ability to ping the other computer. Get it? Can I call you maybe we can get this done by a Tele-connection! ![]() |
