firewire networking XP & W2K

Hi,

I´m trying to network a windows 2000 PC with a Laptop running xp. I installed "firenet" on both machines. Both show that there is a connection between them and react on plugging/unplugging the cable. However there is no throughput. e.g. I cannot ping the laptop from the pc or vice versa. The laptop has a wireless connection to a router with dhcp. I want to connect the PC to share the internet connection of the Laptop for updates downloads etc.

It seems very tricky!

Any help??

I believe that once you've installed firenet, the connections appear like normal ethernet connections. Firstly, check that IP addresses have been assigned correctly. It's probably best to assign them manually, unless you've got a router which has a DHCP server configured. Most networks use the 192.168.0.x subnet - so give the first computer an IP address of 192.168.0.2 and the second computer an IP address of 192.168.0.3. Also make sure that the subnet is set to 255.255.255.0.

Do you have any firewall software running on any of the machines. You'll need to disable this (or configure it for home network). Some anti-virus software also includes a firewall which you should be aware of. Windows XP also includes a built-in firewall - Internet Connection Firewall. Check that this is not enabled.

Also make sure that both computers are set on the same workgroup.

Once you've checked all this, try pinging from one computer to the other and it should work. If it doesn't, on both computers click start, run and type "ipconfig /all > C:\ipconfig.txt" (without the quotes). Then, copy the contents from the two ipconfig.txt files into your next post.

HTH,

Edwin

Something is not right because you see that the IP address is set to 0.0.0.0. This means that the computer will never be able to communicate with the other computer. This probably means that there is a problem trying to get the DHCP server to work properly - are you sure that you have the DHCP server running?

It's probably easier to use manual settings. Open up Network (and Dial-up) Connections from the Control Panel and right-click the network connection. Select Properties and double click Internet Protocol TCP/IP. Select the manual option and enter the address 192.168.1.2 and subnet 255.255.255.0. Then on the other computer use the IP address 192.168.1.3 and the subnet 255.255.255.0. Then try pinging the computers again.

Ok, I did as you said and configured the ips manually.
Though i used 192.168.1.11 for the XP laptop and 192.168.1.15 for the win 2000 PC, but that shouldn´t be a problem should it? Because it´s still not working, can´t ping either of them. see ip config of xp machine:

Windows 2000 machine: in your post a few up you posted the ipconfig but the IP address was set to 0.0.0.0 - could you just repost the IP config for me to check

Windows XP machine: it appears that you have two network connections on that computer - one wireless and one firewire. The correct address seems to have been set for the wireless one but not the firewire one. Select the firewire connection in Network Connections in the control panel and statically assign it an IP address - 192.168.1.12 would do. Each network connection has to have its own different IP address.

btw...setting the IP addresses as 192.168.1.11 etc instead of what I said will not be a problem

OK - to setup the Internet sharing, you need to follow these steps:

On the pc with the Internet Connection, enable Internet Connection Sharing. Once you've done this, go back to the second pc and enter the default gateway as the IP address of the computer with the Internet connection. This will probably be all you need to do to get sharing going.

However, it may still not work. If you can't access sites like www.google.com can you access http://66.102.11.104 ? If you can, then there is a DNS problem which can be resolved.

sharing not working

I´m not sure which adapter I use for the sharing. On the Xp-machine I have the wireless-adapter, which connects to the router + I have the firewire-adapter now, which connects to the win2000 PC.
I set the wirless-adapter to sharing, then windows changed automatically the IP of the firewire-adaptor !!!
Now, I can´t even ping anymore!! This is driving me nuts

Can I just check your setup? You have a router with a wireless connection. You then have one computer with a wireless connection which connects to the router. Then, in that same computer you have a firewire card which connects to another computer with a firewire card.

If this is correct, the router changes the situation a little. Basically, the router should look after all of the settings for you. On your router, check that it's configured properly and enable the DHCP server on it. You'll probably do this through the web-based admin.

Once you've done this, go to the XP computer with the wireless and firewire connection. Open up Network Connections from the Control Panel and highlight both of the connections. Then, right-click on one of them and select Bridge Connections. Once you've done this, right click on Network Bridge and select Properties. Double click Internet Protocol TCP/IP and check that it is set to automatically obtain an IP address (it should get it from the router). Then, click OK and then double click Network Bridge. Click the Support tab and check that an IP address has been assigned.

Then, on the second computer, just make sure that the firewire card gets it's IP address automatically from the DHCP server. It should be able to get it from the router, as long as the bridge you created on the other computer is OK.

In this setup, the XP computer bridges the wireless connection and the firewire connection as though it was one network. Hopefully, as long as DHCP is OK, you should be able to communicate with the computers and access the Internet

Can you communicate between the two computers - ie have you tried pinging between them? If it doesn't, then there's no point in going any further.

If you can't access sites like www.google.com can you access http://66.102.11.104 ? Check this and tell me. It may just be a simple DNS issue.

network bridge

I have an network-bridge with IP : 169.254.101.95 subnet 255.255.0.0

I put the win 2000 firenet into the same subnet with the network bridge as gateway, cannot even ping it!
