You've got me pretty freaking stumped at this point...I'm not coming up with any ideas without seeing things in person.
Basically all we are tying to do at this point is have two computers communicate through the LAN side of a router/Wireless AP. If I come up with anything, I'll get back to you...for now, maybe try defaulting the router, rebooting everything, double checking the IPs of both computers, and trying to ping one another. Also, check if there is a newer version of firmware for your router, it's entierly possible that there are routing issues between the switch and the AP. |

It's ZoneAlarm. I disconnected my aircard (no internet connection so I'm safe to kill ZA), then I shut down ZA and I can ping my desktop from my laptop. I've got to figure out how to set ZA to allow it to run AND have my lan connectivity. HeadElf |

I'm connected!!! I went into ZoneAlarm and just kept futzing (it's my Terrier personality, I CANNOT accept defeat) until I got it set.
In the Alert Log, where it showed it was blocking my laptop, I selected those rows and added them to the trusted zone (button on bottom right). Next I cleared both the logs. In the Firewall I changed the local area network bit (bottom slider) to medium (we live TOTALLY in the sticks and noone could wireless into us unless they're sitting in the driveway which is in the middle of our 12 acres). Then I clicked the Advanced button and checked the logical boxes therein. I can ping the desktop from the laptop! Now I need to figure out how to access the internet. I get "not connected" when I try to use the browser. Ctardi, do you feel this is a never ending quest? <grin> HeadElf Last edited by HeadElf : June 21st, 2009 at 09:57 PM. |

Okay, we are very near to the end! Either print this, or save it to your desktop, because if you mess up, you may be without an internet connection until you reverse your steps.
The next step will be to bridge the network connection. This means that your laptop will connect to the router, the router to the pc, and then it will go through the pc to the internet. There are some limitations of internet connection sharing. The first one is that your LAN card will be assigned an ip of 192.168.0.1 First, you must change the WAN IP of your router to one that is on the same subnet, and is a static ip. Do not touch the LAN or Wireless settings. You should be able to use the following: IP Address: 192.168.0.2 Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1 Primary DNS: 68.28.50.91 Secondary DNS: 68.28.58.92 Enable remote administration of the router (if there is such an option, I don't have the manual for your router handy). If there is not an option, you may not be able to access the admin page of your router from the desktop computer, only from the laptop on either wireless, or if you plug it in. Okay, now for the fun part. On your desktop computer, once you have made the above changes, go into Control Panel, Network Connections. Highlight both of your network connections, and click "Bridge Connections". Follow on screen instructions. Now, your desktop is currently plugged into one of the LAN ports on the router. Move this cable to the WAN port of the router. You're done! If all went well, and knowing us it probably didn't, you should now have an internet connection to your laptop. |

Okay, what do you mean "lan card". I'm running a Gigabyte GA-G33M-S2L motherboard (*I* didn't build the machine, doesn't mean I didn't pick the parts) with a build in ethernet (Realtek something-or-other) so when you say 'lan card' I get this deer-in-the-headlights look . . . Quote:
Okay, the last time I tried to change the IP on the router it was down for two days while I played really unproductive email tag with a Trendnet tech which resulted in me *calling* them to figure out how to undo my mess. I've got the steps written down and can do it again if I must, but I'd rather ask all the questions and do this right the first time. Well heck. I just tried to get into the router admin and I can't get in . . . again. I can reset it to factory settings and get into it . . . maybe. What's up with that? Every time I want to go into its admin I have to reset to factory specs? How useful is that? Tried to reset to factory specs and cannot release or renew. <sigh> Two steps forward and six steps back. <ROFL> Okay, obviously I have to figure out how to get back into the router. As soon as I can manage that I'll work through this as fast as I can with all fingers and toes crossed. HeadElf |

Lan Card / On board ethernet, same difference...replace it with "Local Area Connection" as that should be the text that appears in your Network Settings page.
Something is messed up with that router if you always have to default. |

Uh . . . both? I have just two connections, my broadband modem and my lan. ? I'm supposed to have two? ::deer-in-headlights:: HeadElf |

Yup, that's correct. Think of the bridge as building a connection between your LAN and your broadband modem. |

When I "unshare" my dialup (broadband) I get a third connection call "Internet Connection". So now I have three. I have my Sprint Broadband modem I have my Internet Gateway internet connection I have my local area connection. I can't bridge any of them to each other. ? Edit: When I share my broadband modem with other users on my local area network the Internet Gateway goes away. Does that mean I've bridged that connection? Possibly...why don't you do that, then post the output of "ipconfig -a"? I've only done this with two wired connections, so we are on slightly uncharted territory for me now. |

If all has gone well, I think that should be working...
Unfortunately, I haven't quite come up with a way to simulate this at home to find out for sure. Can you ping 192.168.0.2 from your desktop? How about from your laptop? And finally, can your laptop access the internet? |
