Why not just spend the $30 or so bucks on a small hub and get 2 network cables? I would see that as easier than messing with a crossover cable.

Hehehe - I like the topic title

Anyway, have you checked that you've got no firewall software running on each machine. This includes things like ZoneAlarm and the one built in to Windows XP - Internet Connection Firewall. On the XP computer, right-click Local Area Connection in the Network Connections in the Control Panel, and select Properties. In the Advanced tab, check that ICF is disabled. Also, check that if you have an antivirus software installed then it doesn't have a firewall built in.

Check that on both computers, they have the same workgroup name - you can just use the default MSHOME if you want.

Can you check that the Ip addresses are set ok. You should set the IP address to something like 192.168.0.x (which it sounds like you have) and check that the subnet mask is set to 255.255.255.0. The default gateway can be left blank.

If it still doesn't work pinging, have you tried the XP network setup wizard. Run this on the XP computer, then select the option to create an install floppy which you can use on the 98 computer.
