Help with home wireless network
I have set successfully set-up a wireless network at home connecting my lap top (a) to a desktop (b) computer. I'm using a DI-614+ router as an access point (DHCS is disabled according to instructions from D-link and I was asked to use a crossover cable instead of direct cable). My wireless accesspoint is connected to computer b through a nic card and the computer is used as a gateway for computer a to access the Internet thru computer b. I have an Internal dsl pro 100 modem that does not allow a hookup with the router that's why we are going with this configuration. I can access computer (b) from the lap top (a) but cannot acces the lap top from computer (b). It always askes for a user ID and password, but I don't have a password setup on the laptop. It is very frustrating that I can only communicate one way. Does anyone have a solution. I read on another link that said you must have password authentication enabled on both machines ( computer (b) is XP Home and Computer (a) is XP professional). Where do you do the password authentication if this is the right answer?

I have almost the exact same problem. I have two PCs and a Laptop. All the computers can see each other, but when it comes to accessing the main PC (with the printer), I either get a password prompt or a access denied alert.
Someone out there knows the answer.. and I know its a simple solution, too.. I just cant think of it. |

If password authentication is the problem, I would make sure that on both computers you have an account with exactly the same username and exactly the same password.
Open up control panel and click User Accounts. Either create a new user or change an existing user and create a password. On the second computer, do the same, and create an account with exactly the same username and password. Then, when you try to browse the network from one computer to another, you shouldn't be prompted for a password. When you turn your computer on, you will now have to type in a password. If you don't like this, click start, run and type "control userpasswords2" (without quotes). Un-tick the box that says "users must enter a username and password...", click OK and enter the username and password which you would like to autologon. HTH, Edwin |
