Hello,
I am attempting to network a PC on Win2k Pro and a notebook on WinXP Pro to share an internet connection My previous functional connection was like this: DSL USB Modem---PC---Straight Cable---Notebook I eventually decided to switch to a wireless network to allow for the convinience of lugging the the notebook around. I then purchased a Netgear Wireless Router WGR614v1. I then attempted to try this: DSL USB Modem---PC---Straight and CrossOver Cable (tried both)---Netgear Router:::Notebook. I used the web browser to configure the router to an address of 192.168.0.2 with DHCP enabled with a range of 192.168.0.3 onwards. It (obviously) failed. I was wondering if a ethernet modem was absolutely required for a wireless network and if anyone could suggest an alternative setup of the equipment or the config of the router and the wireless adapter on the notebook. Thanks. |

Well .. the way I see it here, I'm assuming you have a usb modem. and to answer your question, no, it isn't nessessarily required to have an ethernet modem to have a functional network. What you could do is a little setup like this. Plug your cable modem into your computer..(just like how it is, using a usb connection) Connect the router upto your comptuer (I THINK its port 1 maybe for what I'm recomending) and goto setup on your router. Assuming because its a netgear its 192.168.0.1. Now rather than having your router setup as a "router" per say, I believe on that model of netgear, you can set it up as an access point. next thing to do is set ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) on from the usb port to share to the ethernet port in which the wireless router is setup on, which will give the Router (which is now setup as a wireless access point) an ip address that is functional on a network, once that is in place you should be able to connect to your WAP using its unique SSID name, which is "netgear" by default.
That is the only way I can think of using a wireless router with a usb modem, I hope this comes in handy. |
