Home networking troubleshooting
Hi,
I am using a SMC Barricade 2804wbr as a broadband router with D-Link Air Plus Wireless PCI Adapter on newtorked pcs. OS is Windows 2000 on all 3 home networked pcs. I have set up router with DHCP enabled and default IP addressess are being generated. 192.168.2.1 (gateway), 192.168.2.100, 192.168.2.101. LAN Connections on pcs are set up to "Obtain IP address automatically" Host pc is working fine with access to internet. However networked pcs will not access. Trend Internet Security is used and set up to allow traffic on the network. I've disabled and still no joy. When I ping from a user pc to router reply received but when ping from router to user request is timed out. Could this be the problem in my set up? If so what can I do? Any other suggestions? Thanks Jon |

Home networking troubleshooting
Hi, Thanks for reply. Please bear with me as I'm a novice at this but keen to learn and so my terminology maybe a bit off.
In order to clarify set up. I have broadband with a SpeedTouch USB Modem into a pc which has a Realtek Family Fast Ethernet Card. From this card a cable runs to the SMC Router LAN 1 connection. Other pcs have D-Link Wireless Adapters. In reviewing your questions I think I have the latter set up? I have since attempted to disable the DCHP on the router and specify the IP addresses manually on the LAN settings but still no joy in the client pcs being able to access internet using IE 6. Jon |

So what you are saying you have a broadband modem plugging into a USB port on your computer and from that computer you have a NIC going to LAN1 port on a wireless router and then multiple PCs using wireless to connect to that? yes?
I appologize for the questions just want to make sure we are on the same page. If this is correct then you need to put the NIC, router, and three PCs on the same network and enable routing on the windows 2000 PC that is using usb for internet. However I think you may have issues even before that. |

Hi,
Your summary of my set up is spot on. However, I have now resolved the problem/s. For your info 1) I reviewed my router set up and realised on one IP address input I had put a 1 instead of a 2 in the address. Basic I know. 2) Apparently when internet connection sharing using this set up the gateway address needs to be that of the host pc in this case 192.168.2.100 and not the IP address 192.168.2.1 of the router. This wasn't explained in the router manual but I'm sure for the more accomplished network user this was obvious. My motto: You live and learn. Thanks once again. Jon |
