HOSTS, LMHOSTS files.

I have searched info on the HOSTS, LMHOSTS files but still have questions. I have a PC and a Mac connected via a Linksys router.

1. Do I put the NETBIOS names of the machines in the LMHOSTS file? Currently it looks like this:

Code:
127.0.0.1	localhost	#PRE
192.168.1.100	pc-netbios-name #PRE
192.168.1.101	mac-netbios-name #PRE

Does this look right?

2. I think the HOSTS file keeps a list of domains with corresponding IP address. Does this allow the machine to connect to the domain faster?

3. I read that one use of 127.0.0.1 is to stop certian pages/ads loading. If I test this by putting
Code:
127.0.0.1 google.com

in my hosts file, shouldn't this stop google.com loading in my browser? Currently it is not (not stopping it loading that is) so it seems the HOSTS file isn't being read. Any ideas why?

Yes, I think your LMHOSTS file does look correct.

In the sense that it doesn't have to perform DNS on the domain, I suppose it would be quicker. But since you can't enter in every single domain name in the file (and IP addresses change) I wouldn't really bother.

Again, I think the HOSTS file looks correct. Have you tried rebooting? It should stop google.com working. Try www.google.com there as well.
