how to move domain to a new ip

Hi,

what is the proper way of moving a domain to a new ip without downtime? or is that possible?

this is for a website that has member logins, data stored on the database and frequent new data everyday.

thanks.

Your web server should not be a member of the domain it should be in the DMZ. To answer your question its been awhile but this should work...just add a second IP address to the server and router change default gateway then remove the old. if it is a domain controller than you may have to goto each PC and edit registry for new IP or you could just remove the old IP from the router and change default gateway on the server so it will work for both networks. If you have a sql server that is a whole nother issue and a pain especialy if its using a SAN for failover.

but the problem is that when your domain changes ip, there will be at time where some ppl will see the old ip and some will see the new ip.

what is the best way to smooth that out?

Man I must have been drunk hehe your talking about your domain name being changed not a microsoft domain.
If you are staying in the same netblock then just add the second IP address to the router/firewall and setup port redirect off the new IP address. call ISP and change your "A" record, waite a couple days and remove old IP address and port redirect/NAT whatever you are using. ( It takes roughly 24 - 48 hrs for DNS change to fully replicate. If changing ISP's this would be more difficult you would need two routers or another T1 WIC or whatever you have on existing router and connect that to your new ISP link with new address and setup port redirect or NAT whatever you are using and and change your "A" record waite couple days and turn down old ISP link.
