How to set up a workgroup between a win98 and winXP Pro?
Hello, i'm new to this forum and could use some advice. I have two systems and a Linksys 5 port hub. One system is running win 98se and the other is win xp pro. There will be no internet access, I just need a workgroup. I got the hub so I could add a third system later. I know this much so far, I can run two staight through cables from each nic to the hub...port one & port two. I'm a little confused after that. I know this is really basic stuff for a lot of you but I could really use your info. Thank you.

Each computer needs an IP address. Since you haven't got a router or ICS, you'll need to manually assign this to the each NIC. On the first computer, set the following details:
IP Address: 192.168.0.1 Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 On the second computer, you need similar details: IP Address: 192.168.0.2 Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 Then, make sure that firewalls are disabled. On the first computer, click Start, Run and type cmd. In the command prompt type "ping 192.168.0.2" (without the quotes). Check that you get a reply. Then, on the second computer, type "ping 192.168.0.1". If you get replies both ways, then your network should be working. |
