The only difference for XP pro in this case is that the simple file sharing option can be changed. This affects how Windows assesses permissions to shares. Make sure both PCs have the same setting for this, and that the same user accounts (with the same passwords) exist on both machines.

Try the net use from the command line and see what error it returns. Also useful would be running the following from the command prompt on each PC:

net view \\otherPC

nbtstat -n

Post the output from those commands, and maybe we can see what is wrong.

Thank you so very much it was a case of the computer browser service and the server service being disabled. It all works great now all PC’s can view each others files and printers great but I still cant share the internet on any PC. What could it be, I have shared the internet connection and disabled all firewalls. Could it be something to do with having a wireless router with a built in ADSL modem. I have tried disabling the ADSL routing and disabling the hardware firewall with no luck. The internet sharing did work briefly when the network was first setup. So it isn’t impossible. Could it be another problem with services?
Thank you, very much for your continuing support.

p.s. please find attached 4 text files in a zip file I have exported the ipconfig results from each PC and also inserted the text from the .pdf manual that came with the ADSL wireless router. I hope this can be of use to you in finding a solution to my problem.

File Type: zip network.zip (24.7 KB, 170 views)

Looks like a DNS issue to me. Are any of the PCs getting internet with those setting? Looks like they are all pointing to the router for DNS. I don't think that will work. Check the section of the documentation under "Internet WAN" for information about DNS settings.

I have solved the problem. it was a case of the router being the default gateway i had to assign static ip adresses to each PC and use the Gjparker ip adress as the default gateway. Only problem is it dials up without asking me. Interrupting phone calls and running up bills.

Also is there an application that will alert me when GJPARKER has connected so that i know when the user on GJPARKER is using the internet.
