Hi,

Upgrade your win 2k3 system to server using the steps given below:

1. Go to run and type dcpromo.
2. Select first domain in entire forest and complete the wizard by assigning the domain name which is very important.
3. Once the server is setup, go to the client pc with xp and open tcp/ip properties.
4. In prefered dns field, enter ip add of server.
5. Right click my computer and select properties and computer name tab and click on change
6. Select domain button and specify the domain name u gave while upgrading the server
7. Once it will ask for restart and then off it will be connected.

That's all.

If still need in detail search in google.

Hiren

cyclops one of the main aspects of IT work is planning. You should have gotten off to 03 training LONG before you ordered the server.

I would suggest just running dcpromo is a HUGE mistake. You need to understand DNS, especially with a internet link, and how to configure it. You do this BEFORE you run dcpromo OR YOU CAN CORRUPT YOUR W03K INSTALL.

This happens if for example you point your W03K dns server to your isps dns. Well known issue? No I had to find this out for myself and the documentation is there but hard to find.

You also have to plan for the issue of all the present workgroups. Those need to go away and you need to become server centric. Workgroups have security, document version and data backup issues. By going server centrix and having the users only store files on the server with its backup unit you can solve/manage these issues.

There is still the issue of what apps you are running. Are they supported on the 03 platform? Never assume a app that worked p2p will work on a server. Number of them won't.

You will learn about the other issues as you learn 03 server and you migrate your network.

Another thought:
What about the other computers on the network?
Are they running XPpro or Home?
From what I understand Home edition is not built to run in a domain/network type of environment - just workgroups.
