Hello,
I've been doing this networking thing at work for quite some time and I know how to set up and support many LANs. But now I want to create my own WAN. I live in DC and I wanted to set up a LAN at home, with a server (exchange, IIS, etc) on a cable or T1 line. The other LAN is going to be in Baltimore, no servers just workstations (using cable-i guess) I know that I will need a router, but will I need a hub or a switch? What would be the most cost effective means of data transmission. I know T1 is expensive, but I am almost certain that the cost for cable will be astronomical, because of all the bandwidth usage. Can someone point me in the right direction. Thanks ![]() |

Call your local to the area cable company and local to the area phone company for pricing. You would do a VPN thru the internet using the cable co. at each site. You would use frame relay or point to point T1 to connect each end if using a T1. If vpn you would need a vpn server at the main site. Both will require routers at each end. T1's are usually more expensive. You would still need everything you need for a lan since there is a lan behind the wan at each site.
