Internet Connection via a crossover cable on XP pc's
Hi
I have two PC's both running XP home linked up by a cross over cable. They can share files and the client computer shows the broadband connection icon and appears to be receiving packets via the internet gateway but when I try to access the net from the client computer it says I am not connected and gives me the dial up window, but even when I try to connect via this it won't allow me. The system has a network bridge Thanks Dave |

On the computer with the Internet connection, make sure that the Internet connection is shared. You'll want to use Internet Connection Sharing - you should find the option in the advanced settings tab for the connection. Then, on the client computer, make sure that the default gateway is set to the IP address of the other computer.
Where you you have a bridge installed? You shouldn't really need a bridge in this setup I don't think. ICS should work fine. Also, check if it's a DNS problem. Check if you can access the site: http://216.239.59.99 . |

HI Edwin,
Cheers. Quick question on the default gateway . What is the best way to find my PC's IP address and I see I then need to enter in the IP address, subnet mask and default gateway - do you know where I can get these from. Also with the DNS problem should I just enter in URL into the address bar of IE? Many Thanks D |

On XP, open the Control Panel, click Network Connections and right-click your Local Area Connection. Select Properties. Double click Internet Protocol TCP/IP and make sure that you manually assign the settings. Enter IP addresses in the subnet 192.168.0.x and set the default gateway to the IP address of the computer with the Internet connection.
If after doing that, you still don't have Internet access, yes, you can just type that address straight into the address bar in IE. |
