Internet Sharing Between a Win 98 and 2000

Hello,

I'm in need of major help. I hate networking. Recently I just figured how to share files on both computers. Now I need internet.

Ok the 98 is SE. But I don't have the CD, so I can't install ICS. Does anyone know how to do without ICS??? Is it even possible??? I was also wondering, if anyone knows a website, to download the ICS files.

Please help and reply,
Alan

One way that you could get around this would be to install a router. This way, you would not have to worry about cab files. All that you would need is a couple lengths of Cat5 cable and your set to go. Besides, I'm sure that everyone will agree that a router is going to be much more stable than ICS.... (Bad experiences myself with ICS)

I'm sure that there is web sites out there that would offer the files needed to install ICS, but I'm not to sure if throwing the site address is allowed on this forum.

You could also consider asking friends and family for the cd rom as well.

Red face

How does the router help,

I can share files and printers, but I just don't know how to get it to work??? I mean I know a router will let as many pcs on to a network basically, as many as you want. Right now Im using a Crossover from pc1 to pc2. Theres something called NETBUI or something??? I read somewhere, that that has to do with it???

Please help,

The router is just another way to share the Internet connection. You plug the Internet connection into that, and then the computers into it. It shares out the Internet connection for you, without the need for a computer with ICS.

If sharing the Internet is what you want to do, you'll have to get ICS working or buy a router. Routers aren't expensive though. ICS is free, as long as you can find your Windows 98 disc. Otherwise, there is always other software you could install on your computer to share the Internet, but that is probably more expensive than a router and more difficult to setup.

Unhappy

My internet connection is dialup, and the modems in the pc so i cant plug it into a router. I know with cable and dsl, thats what you would do.

So is there a way to get the files or to do it manually???

Thankyou

You'll need Internet Connection Sharing then. You'll need to find a CD to borrow. I'm not going into other methods (downloading from the Internet etc.) which would probably be illegal though.

There probably is, but not suitable for this site. Just search for it yourself on Google. The site would almost certainly be illegal, so there is no way that we must start posting links to it from Dev Shed.
