You don't need a fax machine to get faxes. Get a fax-to-email fax number from CallWave. Try it free.

IP address but not able to access web pages
I just recently installed a new motherboard with an onbaord NIC. When I connected everything up to my LAN and tried to get to a web page I was unable to do so. I checked my IP address and I have one but I still can't get to any web pages. Any help would be appreciated.

Is there something on your LAN which is sharing the Internet to the network? You need a router or a computer with Internet Connection Sharing enabled, to be able to browse the Internet. Once you've got one of these, make sure that the default gateway of the computer is set to the IP address of the computer with the Internet connection or router. Also check that you can ping this address. If you still can't access the Internet, check if you can browse to http://216.239.59.104.

Are you able to ping your DHCP? Make sure that you don't have anything specififed in the TCP/IP settings, unless you want it that way..

The way my LAN is setup is I have a cable modem plugged into a router and then 2 computers plugged into the router. One pc is connected fine to the internet while the other can't seem to get connected. I pinged 216.239.59.104 from the one that can't get out and it came back fine with 0% loss. But when I tried to view it as a web page it said it couldn't find the website. Any other ideas?

What's the IP address of the computer that can't connected?

192.168.2.101 is the IP address of the PC that can't get connected.

What's the IP address of the router? It should probably be 192.168.2.1.

Make sure that you don't have anything specified in the TCP/IP settings..
Other typical router IP's are 192.168.1.1, 192.168.0.1. I think that it depends on the OEM of the router. |

I think the router IP is 192.168.2.1
I checked everything in the TCP/IP and nothing was in there |

Something simple and usually effective is just resetting the computer, router and cable modem. For some reason, from personal experience, it'll work alot of the time.

You could try running the ipconfig/flushdns command from the DOS prompt.

Oh, you are running Windows 98. I guess that i shouldn't have assumed that you were running 2000 or XP. Sorry about that.
What is the error message that you get when you try to ping www.google.com, unknown host? If this is the case then you might have winsocks issues. You might want to think about ripping and re-installing TCP/IP Try this site for a download of a small utility that will replace winsock keys. Save it to your desktop and then run it. It's only 685 KB. http://web.ics.purdue.edu/~shershbe Use at your own risk though.... Hope this helps. |
