I want to share an internet connection btwn 2 computers.
Each has only one nic and one of them connects to my isp through its nic, i want to share the connection by using a hub. i.e plug the internet connection and both of the computers into the hub. i have managed to do this, i can use the net on one of the computers and i can share files btwn the computers but i cant get the second computer on the net, what should i do? P.S my isp provides a client program which i have to run and log into before i can connect to the net its called 24 online, by elitecore. both machines are XP |

You have three options:
1. purchase an additional ip address for the 2nd wkst from your isp. 2. put a router in so you can use multiple internal [your network] ip addresses while only using one ip address from the ISP. 3. put a 2nd nic in the internet access machine and do ICS [internet connection sharing]. This is where you turn your xp box into a router. Otherwise only one machine at a time can get on. If their software program registers the machine name you may only get the one on. |

As matale has his computers set up, you're absolutely right but by adding a 2nd NIC to one machine he could use it as a proxy and share connectivity that way. -The catch is that the "proxy" mahine would have to be turned on to access the Net from the other machine.

With a second nic in one of the computers you'll just be able to use Internet Connection Sharing which is built-in to Windows.
