LAN devilry
A client of mine has two computers networked at his house. Both boxes are running XP home. They're setup as follows: Cable modem connected to a netgear (pr614) router, with each computer plugged into the router via cat5 (he has some vague paranoias regarding wireless).
Every couple of days one of the computers loses its connection. No email, web, can't ping google, ipconfig does nothing. Quick fix is to reset the router, takes a second to do, it's just a pain in the @$$ to have to do every couple of days. Just wondering if anyone else has encountered this and if there is possibly a longer-term solution.... |

Have you tried a firmware update for the router yet? Perhaps that may help.

You dont state if he uses fixed ip addresses or if the router provides via DHCP? Before resetting the router, try clearing it's arp table and rechecking the computers if this works the quick fix is to add static arp settings on the router.

Make sure the router config is correct. Cable modem ISP ip addresses/dns entries in the WAN interface. Should be using dhcp for the Lan interface.
Next time the connection goes down do a ipconfig /renew and post back the results. |
