LAN Help! Cable Modem Win XP

A few days ago my ISP (cable) had an outage and did some maintenance. Since the network has been back up I can connect and browse with my desktop (Win 98/PIII 500mhz) but I can't browse with my SONY VAIO laptop (Win XP PIII 850mhz). The network connect (LAN) shows that I'm connected (and when I talked to the ISP tech support person they said that they can see that I'm connected) but when I click on IE it says detecting proxy settings...then finding site....then it says "page cannot be displayed". I've tried to use my email, AIM, and other internet programs and they won't connect either, so it doesn't appear to be a IE problem. I have run a spyware removal and Virus protection program and still it won't work.

Would you be able to test and see if you can access this site from your browser: http://66.102.9.104 ? If you can, then there may just be a simple DNS problem which can be solved.

What's the IP address on the computer that is not able to connect? If it is 192.168.x.x, are you able to access your router?

In IE go to tools/internet options/connections/lan settings/ and uncheck proxy. check autodetect settings.

You should not need proxy to connect thru your cable router though you don't mention router or if you are using ICS.

A simple test that you are getting a ip address from your router do a ipconfig at a cmd prompt. Is the ip range correct [in the same subnet as your other pc]?

Otherwise go into a bit more detail on your ip/hardware configuration.

As a test disable the XP builtin [or any] firewall on this laptop.
