LAN Internet Access Problem (WinXP<-Win98)

Hi there,
looks like I'm not the first (or last) person to have a problem using Windows ICS.
I've looked at and tried various things suggested here and elsewhere but to no avail.
So here's the problem:

Had 2 Win98SE machines connected, using Analog X to network the two. Worked fine for years.
Have now changed the host to a new XP (Home Edition) machine.
Trying to connect the two using Windows ICS. Have run netsetup on both machines, also tried to change settings manually.

Renewed and released ip addresses for TCP/IP adapters on both client and host (there was something screwed up on the client

alright).
Both computers can see each other, can ping each other, files can be transfered, BUT the client can not access the internet

while the host can.

I've been using comps for years but know virtually nothing about networking (the AnalogX setup was done by my hardware

supplier) so please bear with me.

I'll post the ipconfig's for both below:

Questions:
Host has "DCHP enabled = No" even though DCHP server is set to start automatically in [Administrative Tools][Services]. Does

it have to be enabled? If so, how do I do it.

Host has IP routing enabled. Is this correct???

Client name is given as Mick.mshome.net even though the workgroup is called CLOGHER and the computer name and workgroup are

given as that upon checking the settings.

Other things that may be relevant:

- Got rid of PPP Adapter on client (still shown above) as I'd seen everyone else's client's ipconfig not showing one. Did not

make a difference in any case but perhaps I should get it back?

- Tried to change DNS on client to 159.134.237.6 and 159.134.237.17 but was not sure what should go in 'host name' and

'domain' boxes. Tried 'Mick' and 'CLOGHER' but it did not work.

- Mick has a user account on host.

- Tried setting Client for Microsoft Networks as primary logon on client - no joy.

- Enabled Net BIOS over TCP/IP on host even though ISP said not to do that; could not figure out how to do it on client. No

joy.

- IE on client is set to [LAN settings] Automatically detect settings

- TCP/IP bound to Intel(R) PRO PCI Adapter on client is set to Automatically detect settings

- On Host: For dial-up connection, under [Properties][Connections] File and Printer sharing for Microsoft Networks is

unticked as I reckon that those are shared over the LAN connection (it's ticked there). Correct?

- Dial-up connection on host is shown as [un]connected, shared, firewalled

- I have Zonealarm installed and 192.168.0.178 is in the trusted zone (this setup worked fine with AnalogX). Anyway, just in

case, I exited ZA but to no avail.

Please, please, please, does anyone have an idea of what's wrong here???

Many thanks.
Ute

disable the XP firewall as a test. Your settings look correct. Something on the xp box is preventing routing and usually it is the xp firewall.

Thank you wanderer.
I finally managed to get it working. Apparently what had happened was this.
The first time netsetup.exe was run on both host and client was:
- Firewall (ZA) had not yet been installed.
- Client IP settings were messed up.
That's why it did not work.

After correcting the client IP settings I never got back to the stage where the programme allowed me to copy the netsetup programme onto floppy for installation on client.
Running netsetup on host always gave error messages.
That's why I had begun to mess with the settings manually.
When I started from scratch:
Restart, shut down ZA, run netsetup on host with internet on, run netsetup on client with internet on IT WORKED!
Why on earth it wouldn't work on manual settings beats me, and you say yourself the settings look ok.
Only remaining problem: ICS and Free ZoneAlarm don't go together; as soon as ZA is on, client cannot access internet even though the client computer and the ethernet adapter are in the trusted zone. I have confirmed from other posts elsewhere that I will need to purchase e.g. ZAPro if I don't trust ICF... which I don't, but that, as they say, is another story...

Cheers and thanks for your help.
Ute
