Can you ping each computer? Click Start, Run and type cmd. In the command prompt, type "ping 192.101.0.2" (without quotes) and see if you get a response.
Also, are either computers running a firewall (like ZoneAlarm or ICF). Try disabling that and trying ping again. |

hi edwin, i did that before already, but i couldn't ping from the computers... i have firewalls, but i only turn them on when i get online... btw, a technician told me that that's the problem with win xp home, you can't open the network... is that true?

I'm not sure. Only really use XP pro, but home should be able to go on a network OK. Why don't you try running the network setup wizard on the xp home computer (Start > All Programs > Accessories > Communications > Network Setup Wizard). Select the correct settings for Internet access etc. and check the workgroup.
Otherwise if: Cables connected OK Firewall software removed Same workgroup TCP/IP installed Ip addresses set correctly subnet mask OK I can't think (at the moment!) why it's not working. I'll keep thinking... |

I don't believe that this will make a difference, but perhaps its worth a try. From your ipconfig settings, the computers are on a Ip address of 192.101.0.xxx. Normally, you would use 192.168.0.xxx. Perhaps you should try this, instead of what you are using at the moment. There may possibly (but unlikely) be something in Windows Xp home stopping it from networking with these Ip addresses.

LAN problem
If you are still working on your LAN problem.
Try to perform Ping to the other computer system. See if you receive any reply. E.g. from your W2K system (i.e. IP: 192.101.0.1), try to perform Ping onto your Win XP system (i.e. 192.101.0.2) Open your command prompt. Enter Ping 192.101.0.2 You can also go to IE of your W2K system Enter "\\" w/o the quote followed by Win XP's computer name or IP address. Hope this helps. ![]() |
