Hi,
Are the computers on the same workgroup? Is the TCP/IP network protocol installed on both computers? Are the IP addresses set correctly? Eg: computer 1 IP:192.168.0.1 subnet: 255.255.255.0 computer 2 IP: 192.168.0.2 subnet: 255.255.255.0 Can you ping from one computer to the other? HTH, Edwin |

Could I have a look at ipconfig /all for each machine.
Open up the command prompt (Start > Run > cmd) and type ipconfig /all > c:\ipconfig.txt Then copy the contents from c:\ipconfig.txt onto a post and I'll have a check. |

Hi,
The XP computer looks fine - ip and everything set OK. However, for the Windows 2000 computer it says "Media State . . . . . . . . . . . : Cable Disconnected" There is no ip address for this computer. Check that the network cable is plugged in properly. Also, go to Network Connections and the LAN connection will probably have a little red cross, indicating that it is unplugged. Once it is plugged in OK, setting the IP address correctly should solve your problem. HTH, Edwin |

With Windows XP / 2000:
Start > Control Panel > Network Connections. Right-click LAN connection and select properties. Double click Internet Protocol TCP/IP and then you get options to configure IP address, subnet, default gateway and DNS severs. HTH, Edwin |

That is the same - open up network and dial-up connections and right click the "local area connection". Then follow instructions in previous post.

ok so i have changed the ip adress to IP:192.168.0.2 and it said that the ip adress was in use on the computer with the internet .. computert with xp... so we changed it to 192.168.0.3 then what? and do we need a default gateway?

Each computer should have a unique IP address (such as 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.0.2 etc.). The subnet mask should be 255.255.255.0. The default gateway should point to the IP address of your router or computer which provides Internet access for the network (probably 192.168.0.1).
The DNS servers are used for translating domain names into IP addresses. Depending on your network, you may not have a DNS server. The router may act as a DNS server, in which case you can enter these the IP address of the router here. Otherwise, you can leave this blank or enter your ISPs DNS servers. |
