Linksys Forward port 81 request to port 80
Hey everyone,
I have what I hope is a simple question. My ISP blocks port 80. No big deal, I'll just run Apache on port 81. I used to have a Belkin router that let me do something like: Forward incoming requests on port 81 to port 80 on machine x. My question is, can my Linksys router do that? I'm sure it can, but I just can't figure it out. The current port warding only lets you map the incoming port to it's matching port on the machine. I have a Linksys WRT54-g Wireless Router with Firmware irmware Version: v8.00.2. Thanks, vital101 |

In this case, simply make Apache listen for requests on port 81 and with your belkin router, forward port 81 to the LAN IP address of the machine hosting your website...Ports can't be switched in mid-flight.
Only problem is when people want to view your web page, they will ALWAYS have to enter the port WITH the URL: http://www.mysite.com:81 No way around this as the user's browser needs to know BEFORE hand what port to make the request on. The HTTP standard uses port 80 by default when entering a URL into the browser...If your website hadsto run on port 81, users need to request the website on port 81...

My ISP does the same thing, but it doesnt block 443, so I host my projects for freelance clients on that one, and just let them know its going to ask them for a certificate. I use xammp, and it has one already to go.

I don't believe most low-end linksys routers do any port redirecting, but there are plenty of other programs like rinetd that might work for you.
I've only seen one broadband linksys that included port redirection, but I have no idea what model it is, it's at one of my client's sites. It looks different, and the config screens are very different from my befsr41/81 that doesn't allow you to map incoming ports to different ports.

Any $60 router will do it. If you want your moneys worth, try this out. I did it, and all of the little tweaks you can do are awesome. http://lifehacker.com/software/router/hack-attack-turn-your-60-router-into-a-600-router-178132.php |
