Linksys wireless slow file sharing
Hi everybody,
I have a Linksys wireless router (BEFW11S4) with DHCP and with WEP encription disabled, and connected to two computers: - One computer using Win 98 connected to the router via Ethernet card and cable; -One computer using Win 2000 and connected to the router through a wireless access point. The DSL connection works perfect in both computers and I can transfer files from the computer with win98 to the one with win2k. However, it is REALLY slow if I want to transfer files from the Win2k computer to the Win98 one. One Mb of data can take almost an hour to transfer, and we are going crazy about it. Does anybody have an idea of what could be happening? Thank you SO much for any help. |

Hi Kimya,
I had a similar issue once and I changed a setting in the Local Security Settings and this appeared to make a difference for me. I have no idea whether it'll make a different for you, but here it is: Click Start, Run and type gpedit.msc. In the Group Policy Editor, expand Computer Configuration, Windows Settings, Security Settings, Local Policies, Security Options. In there, there'll be four settings: Microsoft network client: Digitally sign communications (always) Microsoft network client: Digitally sign communications (if server agrees) Microsoft network server: Digitally sign communications (always) Microsoft network server: Digitally sign communications (if server agrees) Set all of these to Disabled. After this, you'll need to reboot the computers a few times (I think it may be around three times). I don't know why this is so many, but there we are! Hope this helps, but I'm not sure it will. |

Hi,
I just tried it and rebooted the computers several times -- it's still just as slow. :/ Thank you so much for your help though, I really appreciate it. |

Hi,
Have seen quite a few bad reports relating to this Linksys model, only suggestion I can make is to update the firmware, sometimes this works and sometimes it dont. JonO |

An interesting thing to try - what happens if you plug the Windows 2000 computer directly into the router and try transfering the file. This would skip out the wireless access point completely. If it was still slow, then there's some configuration problem - otherwise a firmware update may be a good idea.

We have the latest version of the firmware... we already tried connecting the wireless (win2k) computer to the router via Ethernet, and the problem is still there. Since it's only slow in one direction, we think it might be some configuration problem (maybe some security option) that is delaying the process. Thanks both for replying!

I’ve done some research and found quite a lot of info. I realise that there is a lot here (most from http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/win98/t1008096447) but hopefully something here will be able to help you.

All this info has been lifted straight from other sites, so forgive me if it doesn’t completely apply or is wrong. But I think you should find some things that help. BTW in many cases, you can simply replace XP with 2000 – the process should be very similar between the two OSes |

No problem
Do let us know your outcome though as it would be really useful to see if anything there was relevant! |

Well, we tried everything and nothing seemed to work... but we finally solved the problem by installing Windows XP on the Win98 computer. It seems that 98 sometimes gives lots of problems like this with the security/user settings. The communication between XP and 2k is perfect now.

Yeah, besides that computer didn't even have SE... just 98. It needed an update. Thanks for everything! ![]() |
