Long distance networking 50 miles apart

Hi
Me and my girl friend both have verizon dsl. We live appox 50miles apart. We are trying to directly connect to each other using our dsl services. I am on a linksys router which is connected to a westell modem. She is on a westell modem/router. In dial up we used to use Windows hyperterminal but now we want to share files directly as if we were on a lan. I hope you can help me out with this.
