I'm kind of confused too. Surely you are using the router (with an IP address of 192.168.0.1) to connect to the Internet. This is also the DHCP server, but your laptop is using something with an IP address of 192.168.0.50 for a DHCP server. Are you sure that you do not have another DHCP server running on the network? You should only ever have one running at a time.

I don't know where you would change the default gateway - the router should automatically give out its own IP address as the default gateway, since you will be using it to connect to the Internet.

ok here is my setup to put u in the picture

I have an ADSL connection that a SERVER (COMPUTER) connectes to through a modem. Then the server connects via a NIC to a Switching HUB. From there the wired computers connect. Then for the wireless there is an Access Point that is plugged directly into the Switching hub and then the laptop connects through that..

when you told me to set the leptop for DHCP i set the Acess Point to assign IP's fro 0.100 to 0.199 that is how i got over the 169 thingy!!

Hopefully that clears it up.... but dont solve it !!

thanks for all your advice...

whats next !!

Cheers

RF

It looks like your access point is assigning IP addresses and your server with the Internet connection is probably assigning IP addresses. Disable the acesss point DHCP server, as this isn't the device with the Internet connection. As long as Internet Connection Sharing is enabled on the server, DHCP will be enabled and the computer should hand out IP addresses to clients. You only want the one DHCP server. See what happens when you disable the access point DHCP server and renew the IP address of your laptop - then look at the ipconfig /all again. Your server should hopefully hand out an IP address and it should work!

nope not sure what is going on, i tried stopping the access point from being a DHCP server but the laptop couldnt connect to the web so then i decided that maybe the IP of the Access Point should be dynamic....no i can't access it !! cus i dont know its ip

DOH

i think i just need to get it back to the working state and stop being lazy !!! Unless you have any other ideas..!!

Thanks for your help

RF

p.s. is there anyway i can scan the network and see all the ip's of things connected to the sqitching hub?? -- cus i could really do with it now that i cant connect to the Access Pont

and the reset button dont fix it either bummer really screwed it up

You'll probably find that the access point has been assigned a reasonably low IP address - just try from 192.168.0.1 upwards and you'll soon find it. There is software which will scan a network - a search at download.com for "network scanner" (http://download.com.com/3120-20-0.h...nner&tg=dl-2001) will probably reveal some that will work. But you may be able to easily find it, so it's not worth the effort.

To get it back to its working state, you basically need to assign everything a static IP address. Your server with the Internet connection needs to have Internet Connection Sharing and have an IP address of 192.168.0.1, a subnet of 255.255.255.0 and a blank default gateway.

The access point (once you find it's IP address) should be static (so that you can always find it in the future) and you should have the DHCP function disabled.

For all other computers on the network, assign them a static IP address like 192.168.0.x (where x isn't 1 or the number for the access point). Set the subnet to 255.255.255.0 and the default gateway to 192.168.0.1. This should return the network to how it was working before.

I've just had another thought though - if the wireless access point has a DHCP server, does this mean that it is a router as well? Could you plug your cable/DSL connection into the wireless access point and use this to access the Internet? The access point could then have DHCP enabled and automatically assign addresses to the clients. If the wireless access point doesn't function as a router, then ignore this.

The best way to completely solve this problem wouuld be to use DHCP, only from the computer with the Internet connection. Internet Connection Sharing, when enabled, should make the computer function as a DHCP server and should hand out IP addresses to your other computers.

thanks for the scanning software, i will have to use it as the only problem with starting from low ip's is that for sum reason my DHCP server likes to assign ips from 169 sometimes.,.... DOH

no the access point isnt a router as well.

yes i know how to get it back to waht it was -- but it is just finding the IP of the Access point!!

Thanks for you help -- guess i gotta start scanning !!

Yeah - well I guess you'll learn not to give the access point a dynamic address in the future!

It shouldn't take too long to find it though.

I really can't imagine that it would take very long. Are you sure that even holding down the reset button for about 30 seconds on the router doesn't reset the settings? This would be a simpler way. Perhaps you have to unplug it while you hold down the reset switch.

Try this Ping Monitor: http://www.jcsoftware.net/helpping.htm. It says it can scan a range of IP addresses and check if they are responding. There's a 30 day trial you can download.

If you have got your network working again, you should be able to change the IP address and settings of your laptop using the netsh command from the command prompt. You can use this in batch files so that you run one file when you are at home, and another when
