managing two different wireless network settings....program for it?

As you may have seen by my other post i have been trying to link my laptop to my home wireless network. Well having now got to uni i need to connect my laptop to the net there! which is fine althouth i had to change some settings like the IP etc

Does anyone know of a decent (preferably free) program that i can run to change settings of network with 'one-click' as opposed to setting the IP addy each time etc...

Any suggesstions / links would be great!

Thanks

RF

Is there no way you can use DHCP? Surely at your university they will be running a DHCP server which can automatically assign you the correct details. You just need to make sure at home that your router is also configured as a DHCP server so you can connect to the Internet at home as well.

You'll also need to make sure that your network card is set to obtain its IP address automatically from a DHCP server.

Setting up DHCP should be OK as long as you do configure it correctly. If it's not set up correctly, then your computer will create a private IP address for itself when it boots up, and you're likely to loose all connectivity within the network. I think I recommended setting up static Ip addresses to you before because you were having difficulty setting up a DHCP server, but if you can set it up, DHCP will allow you to just move from one location to the other much easier.

If it doesn't work after you have started using DHCP, open the Command Prompt and type "ipconfig /all" (without the quotes) and you can check what IP address you have been assigned. If you get something like 169.xxx then you know that your computer and DHCP server are not communicating properly.

Not too sure what you mean...

At home did you enter the ISP DNS server into the alternate DNS server box in the local area connection properties? If you enter the DNS servers manually, it's not going to automatically choose a DNS server - it will only use the ones that you enter. You may need to manually enter the DNS server for your university in the preferred DNS server, and you may find that this setup works for both at home and at university.

However, if it doesn't, try to get the DNS servers assigned automatically. DHCP servers can hand out DNS servers - the DHCP server at your university will probably do this, although you'll need to set the options in the local area connection properties to automatically obtain DNS servers. At home, you may find that your router can also give out DNS servers.

Can you open a Command Prompt (Start, Run, cmd) and type "ipconfig /all > C:\ipconfig.txt" (without quotes) and copy the contents of this ipconfig.txt file into your next post? Also do this on one of the other computers which doesn't need you to enter the DNS servers. It will be interesting to see if there are any differences.
