HI
I've tried to link two computers running windows xp pro using a DIY cross cable converter( from this link URL). I've followed ur guide in setting the IP's address and Subnet mask. But I have a problem. When i link-up the two computer using a straight cable and the DIY cross cable converter, my network card connection is shown as disconnected. I've tried to test the convertor by connecting a straight cable and the DIY cross cable converter, one end to a computer and the other to my internet access network port, and my network card connection is shown as connected. Can anyone help me solve this problem?? Is there any particular service that must be enable or network components needs to be installed? Thanks in advance. |

At a guess i'd say your cable isn't working correctly. Is there any way you can test the cable between two computers that are already networked, or could you borrow a crossover cable from somewhere and see if it still says disconected?
What o/s are you using?

If you look at the 8-pin modular plug that goes into your nic or wall outlet from the side WITHOUT the little clip and the pins pointing away from you, the pinout is as follows from left:
Pin 1&2= data send, becomes pin 3&6 at the other end. Pin 3&6= data return, becomes pin 1&2 at the other end. It is quite common to get this wrong. Also remember that the pins mentioned in pairs need to be actual pairs inside the cable. In other words, you need two pairs. The remaining pins are not necessairy for standard operation of up to 100 mbps, more that enough for home use. Let me also mention that an rj45 crimp tool is not something that guarantees success, you might have to do things more than once to get the connections in place. |
